Kindergarten library program: The West Contra Costa school district has joined the East Bay Community Foundation and Bring Me A Book, a nonprofit literacy organization, to create a small library at 70 kindergarten classrooms in all 19 Richmond elementary schools.

The Richmond Kindergarten Library Initiative will be launched at 9 a.m. Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Stege Elementary, 4949 Cypress Ave., Richmond.

As part of the program, each class will get a bookcase with 30 new, hardcover, bilingual books and annual book replenishments. Two literacy workshops will be offered at each school for parents, caregivers and teachers to learn about the importance of reading aloud and how to create daily read-aloud routines with children.

The program is funded by the East Bay Community Foundation with a $270,000 grant.
